How Do You Stop Forwarding One-Word Telegram Messages?
Some noise cannot be described by a word list, because it has no words worth listing: "ok", a thumbs-up, "thanks", "+1". And at the other extreme there is the thousand-character essay that makes a signal channel unreadable. Length filters deal with both, and they take ten seconds to set up.
What the two numbers do
The comparison is strict on both sides: a message exactly as long as the minimum passes, and one exactly as long as the maximum passes too. Only what is genuinely shorter or genuinely longer is dropped.
- Minimum: messages shorter than this are dropped. Set it to a small number, around 15 to 25 characters, to remove acknowledgements without touching real content.
- Maximum: messages longer than this are dropped. Useful when the destination is meant to stay scannable.
- Zero means the limit is off. That is the default for both.
What counts as length
The number of characters in the text of the message, or in the caption of an attachment. Spaces and punctuation count; formatting does not, because bold and italics are not characters. A photo with no caption has a length of zero, which matters: with a minimum set, photos without a caption are dropped along with the one-word replies.
If reading text inside images is switched on, what is found in the picture is joined to the message before the length is measured. A screenshot that used to count as zero can then pass a minimum comfortably.
Where it beats a keyword list
A keyword list needs you to predict the noise. Length does not: "ok", "yes", "same", an emoji on its own and every future variant of them are all short, and one number covers the lot. In a group where members react constantly to a few substantial posts, a minimum alone often does more than a page of blocked words.
The reverse case is rarer but real: a maximum keeps a destination free of long-form posts when what you want to relay is short alerts.
Instead of a maximum: shorten rather than drop
If a long message is worth having but not worth reading in full, there is an alternative to dropping it: an AI summary shortens it and relays the summary. That is a Platinum feature and it has its own page. A maximum length throws the message away; a summary keeps the substance.
Common questions
How do I stop short replies like "ok" from being forwarded?
Set a minimum length on the rule, around 15 to 25 characters. Anything shorter is dropped, including future variants you have not thought of, which is what a keyword list cannot do.
Does a photo without a caption get dropped by a minimum length?
Yes, because its text length is zero. If you want media regardless of caption, either leave the minimum off or use the media filters to decide what passes.
Does the length include the text inside a screenshot?
If reading text inside images is switched on, yes: it is joined to the message before the length is measured. Otherwise a screenshot counts as its caption only.
What does a value of zero mean?
That the limit is off. Both minimum and maximum are zero by default, so no message is dropped for its length until you set one.
