When Someone Edits the Original, Does the Forwarded Copy Change Too?

What happens when the original is edited

The copy in your destination is edited in place: same message, new content. Nothing is deleted and nothing is posted twice, so the conversation does not fill with corrections, and anyone who scrolls back later reads the right version.

It works on the text of a message and on the caption of an attachment. The attachment itself is not replaced, because Telegram does not allow the file behind a message to change.

What is re-applied to the new text

Two things are deliberately not re-applied. Link handling rules are not re-run, and neither are the AI steps — translation, summary, rewriting — because re-running them on every edit would charge you again each time a source fixes a typo. On a rule that translates, an edit therefore replaces the translated text with the new original: that is a real trade-off, and it is better to know it than to discover it.

• Your replacements: a link you swap stays swapped in the edited version.
• Your header and footer: they are put back in place around the new text.
• The original formatting: bold, italics and links in the edited message arrive intact.

How far back it works

The link between an original and its copy is kept for seven days. Edit a message published within that window and the copy follows; edit something older and the copy stays as it was, because the connection between the two has been let go.

Seven days is deliberate: keeping every link for ever would mean an unbounded list, and edits to month-old messages are rare enough that the cost is not worth it. The link survives a restart of the service, so an update to the platform does not break the connection to messages relayed before it.

When it cannot update the copy

In all three cases the original edit is simply not mirrored; nothing else about the rule is affected and new messages keep arriving normally.

• The copy was deleted in the destination by hand: there is nothing left to edit.
• Permission to edit in that destination was removed.
• The message is older than the seven-day window.

Switching it off

It can be turned off per rule. The case for doing so is an archive: a destination meant to record what was said at the time, where a later correction would rewrite history. For everything else, leaving it on is what keeps the destination honest.
